Education from Birth E-Course

“The greatness of the human personality begins at the hour of birth. From this almost mystic affirmation there comes what may seem a strange conclusion: that education must start from birth.”

I have been asked several times about offering an E-Course for parents. One that provides more in-depth information and allows for more interaction between me and the participants. After a lot of thought, I decided to do it. I discovered Montessori and took the 0-3 training before the birth of my first child. I have really enjoyed implementing the philosophy with both sons from birth and would love to share this experience in a more detailed way. I have put a lot of thought into preparing the course and I hope you try it and find it helpful.

Understanding and Supporting the Infant

This course focuses on the child from birth to walking comfortably. We will cover information for the child till about 18 months.

Week 1: The Big Picture: Characteristics of the Human

• Montessori’s theory of the differences between humans and animals
• Our human needs and tendencies; and How those relate to the child
• Stages of human development from birth to 24 years old with special focus on the first stage

Understanding this big picture will allow us to then narrow down and look specifically

at the child’s first years

Week 2: Characteristics of the Infant

• The Absorbent Mind
• Sensitive Periods

We will look at what they are and how to recognize and support these special characteristics of our babies

Week 3: The Adult’s Role

• Knowledge
• Preparing the environment,
• Observation
• Removing obstacles
• Linking the child to the environment

We will discuss practical applications of information we have learned about the child and her development.

Week 4: The Child from Non-walking to Walking

• Movement and Coordination (Gross and Fine)
• Eating
• Sleeping
• Physical Care
• Language

With a focus on the environment and activities, we will discuss how to support each stage of development for each of these areas,  as well as how to lay the foundations for independence and discipline

Week 5: How to Get Started

• Presenting Activities
• Choosing Toys
• Choosing Books

In this final week, we will discuss how to get started with Montessori, and most importantly, how to trust the process.

Structure:

On Mondays and Wednesdays, I will provide a lecture, relevant readings and an assignment.  You can access the information by password-protected website.  On Fridays, I will provide answers to any questions raised during the week as well as feedback on previous assignment.  In addition to a private Facebook group to interact with me and other students in the course, you will be able to schedule 2 one-on-one consultations with me as well.

What You Will Get from This Course:

This course will provide the opportunity to gain a good understanding of the WHYs that will guide you in implementing Montessori at home.  There are a lot of examples of activities and materials on the internet; however, understanding these foundation topics will help you know how to start; why and when to offer activities; and how to problem-solve when something doesn’t seem to be working.

What You Won’t Get from This Course:

This course will not give you a formula on how to get your baby to sleep through the night, or when to completely wean from breast milk. I’ll share Montessori-friendly sleep solutions and ways for introducing solids.  I will also share my personal experiences of implementing these with my two children; however, sleep and weaning are so individual and should be completely personal choices that every family has to make for themselves.  I will provide a guide map, but you must choose your own route.

This is not a teacher or parent certification course. This is an educational and support course not intended to qualify you for a job, but to equip you with Montessori knowledge and practical applications. I am happy to provide information on training and certification courses.

Why You Should Take This Course with Me:

I am an AMI trained Assistant to Infancy (0-3 years old) and have applied the Montessori philosophy with my two children since their births. I am also completing the AMI 3-6 training. Apart from my qualifications, I am in the trenches with you. I am a mother to a 2-year-old and a 7-month-old, so I’m not far removed from the experience. I have recently been in your shoes, and I know what you are going through. We’ll be taking this journey together. While we will be discussing the theory, it will be offered in a very practical way. I am passionate about children, parenting and Montessori and I think it will come through in the course.
