I recently wrote about Montessori, imagination and pretend play, so I thought it would be helpful to share some of our favorite open-ended toys that foster imagination and are Montessori friendly. I have also included the few pretend sets that we have purchased based on interest from the boys.
Listed in order of frequency of use
- Wooden blocks
- Tool box
- Wooden Van
- Turtle sandbox
- Truck and bulldozer
- Schleich Animals – Farm and wild
- Barn
- Play doh
- Kitchen Utensils
- Doctor set
Other items that get used in a lot of their pretend playing are
- Walker wagon
- Buckets, baskets, any containers
- Child sized furniture especially chairs
- Teddy bears
- Fabrics
Everything on this list are items that we own and that have been thoroughly used and continue to be used by my children through different stages of development. They are also the materials that you can usually find my husband using with the boys. I realize some of them are expensive so please consider these suggestions and feel free to find alternatives that work for your budget.
